The old saying... "I wish I knew then what I know now.", totally sums up my learning experience in this class (EDU 533). When I read the learning outcomes at the beginning of the class, I was overwhelmed. I had basic and I mean BASIC computer skills. I never thought that I would be able to navigate and use web 2.0 tools effectively. Heck, I didn't even know what web 2.0 tools were!
These are the learning outcomes for the class:
This course develops ICT literacy for teachers with the ultimate aim of using technology to enhance understanding and achievement of 21st century learners, allowing them to further succeed in a technology rich society. Concepts to master include such things as digital citizenship, web publishing, digital media, hardware, software, information security, social impact, COPPA, CIPA, and the limits of technology integration in a school environment. Students develop computer related skills in support of integrating technology in the classroom. This is accomplished, in part, by the mastery of communication and collaboration platforms, development of Professional Learning Networks (PLNs), and the Read/Write web or web 2.0 technologies.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Demonstrate the understanding of how technologies can effectively promote student learning
2. Evaluate and use a variety of current technologies to enhance content instruction and to advance studentsí technological literacy
3. Design meaningful and authentic digitally based learning experiences with multiple and varied assessments
4. Reflect upon and demonstrate effective use of digital tools and resources
5. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of safe, ethical, legal and moral practices related to digital information and technology
6. Illustrate through application how state and national standards are implemented within the curriculum (e.g., NH Curriculum Frameworks, ISTE (NETS-Teacher/NETS-Student) and NH-ICT Literacy Standards for K-12 Students (306.42)
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the use of adaptive technologies and other digital resources to personalize and differentiate learning activities for every student
8. Evaluate, adapt and reflect on emerging tools and trends by participating in local and global learning communities and by reviewing current research and professional literature
As I look at the learning outcomes now, I feel that I have not only met, but exceeded them. I am equipped with the skills needed to provide varied, meaningful, effective and technological learning experiences for my students. I also feel confident about using technology, not only in the classroom, but in my personal life as well. A blog post would not provide me with sufficient space to write about all that I have learned. A book may be more suitable!!!!! I do not take the credit for my learning experience in this class. Kim Tufts is the reason we have learned so much. Her teaching style, wealth of knowledge and resources are what made me a confident "techie" She teaches in a way that meets the needs of all learning styles and makes technology seem approachable. She is the reason why I feel so confident about technology integration.
To discuss and evaluate all of the web 2.0 tools I have learned about would take too long so I have picked my top 3 favorite web 2.0 tools that I think would provide me and my students the "biggest bang for our buck."

1. Google Accounts or Gmail for me is the number one way for students to collaborate, share and create. It is a free tool. Google documents prepares students to collaborate with the teacher and fellow classmates and offers a variety of ways to interact. It can be accessed from home and any other locations with internet access. You can't "lose" your homework and the dog can't eat it. Group projects with power point can be done from various locations and actual face time is not required with Google Accounts. Google hangout allows for interaction and video conferencing. Blogger is available for class blogs and a Google Account lets you access all your stuff — Gmail, photos, and more — from any device. A student who is skilled in using a Google Account has a large amount of free tools available to him/her. So if you have a class with limited availability, Gmail may be the answer on a basic level to technology integration.

2. Kerpoof is a great tool to use with my kindergarten class. It is kid friendly. It is created by Disney, so of course it appeals to younger students. Kerpoof allows students to draw, make movies, create stories, make cards, play games and practice spelling. The tool provides many lessons for teachers to use. They cross reference the standards that they use in the lessons. Ideas for teachers are also provided as well as teacher accounts where students can save their work.

3. Diigo is a bookmarking tool that allows users to research, collaborate and highlight areas of interest on the web. Diigo stands for “Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff.” It is a social bookmarking program that allows you to save your ‘favorites’ online, so that they can be accessible from any computer with an internet connection.
You can also highlight parts of web pages that are of particular interest to you or, you can attach sticky notes to specific parts of web pages. These highlights and sticky notes are always there whenever you return to the original web page.
The ‘social’ part of the bookmarking program is also very useful. Diigo users tagging and annotating pages online has created a virtual library on almost any subject you may be interested in. This tool is very valuable for teachers who want to organize and search for information while collaborating with their peers.
Why is it important for all teachers to integrate technology into the lessons they teach, regardless the age of the students or genre that you teach?
Technology integration means that students use technology to learn content and show their understanding of content, not just their expertise with a tool. Mary Beth Hertz, the author of What Does "Technology Integration" Mean? feels that technology shouldn't be treated as a separate subject but should be used in the content areas as a tool that shows understanding and is embedded in the curriculum.
Technology integration is not seamless in all classrooms and it appears in a variety levels throughout America. Many factors are involved with the level of integration in classrooms; availability, funding, and the teacher's expertise are a few.Technology has changed education and how educators can leverage new educational tools to personalize learning, encourages collaboration, and prepare students for the future. Students who use and are comfortable with technology will be better prepared for future learning and vocations.
If we take the time to let our students explore the tools with guided practice, we can ensure that your classroom will move toward true integration.
Those of us who are limited due availability should pick a few web 2.0 tools to integrate. A few tools that students are well skilled with are better than no tools at all. Flip cameras, document cameras and a few good websites allow students to use technology at a basic level. This basic level still allows for collaboration and variety. It allows a student to show understanding and meets the needs of varied learning styles.
State and national standards can be met in so many ways with technology integration. Assessment and understanding can be varied with the use of technology. Variety allows educators to keep students engaged and interactive in the learning process. Today's student or "digital native" has always had technology and they use it on a regular basis in their everyday life. We should embrace that and allow them to learn in a way that is familiar to them and makes them feel comfortable. After all, it is the student's learning that we should be concerned with, not our own comfort and ease with teaching. It is a teacher's responsibility to reflect, grow and continue to learn in order to meet the needs of the students he or she is entrusted with.
